Your home is your castle, this is not a purely North American idea but is so prevalent that many self-defense laws are known as castle doctrine. If you are not planning to bug out and you are going ride out whatever situation arises in your home it’s important to know a few different methods of making your home into a defensible fortress. These upgrades can be done before an SHTF situation and are not something a neighbor may think is weird.
A Better Door
Too many homes these days come with really terrible doors. This things are either light and flimsy or made with some huge panel of decorative glass. These doors are inviting smash and grabs. Instead, consider replacing it with a nice thick wooden door. You may need a new door frame to support it. These doors are attractive and capable of withstanding some abuse.
Another option is a series of decorative steel security doors from Home Depot. These doors feature shatter-resistant glass and a method of creating a steel barricade without making your house look like a prison. Google the Solstice White Outswing Security Door and see what I’m talking about.
No one I know wants to put bars on their windows, and not many people live an area where this is necessary anymore. However, there is an effective security option that protects windows and allows the easy escape in case of a fire. Security film companies like 3 M offer an invisible and dial purpose option. These films can be applied by the homeowner easily, and have the added benefit of cooling your home. These films essentially make your windows shatter proof. The glass will break, but the film will force it to cling together. This will slow down any potential entry and allow you to react.
Plant Some Bushes
This technique is so low tech and brilliant. Plant some bushes under your windows, anyone looking to come in will have to go through the bushes, creating more noises, and potentially being a pain. Plant something with some bite, you know, some thorns. Roses work nicely and are attractive as well.
