Handguns come in a lot of different flavors these days, there are some for hunting, for self-defense, for competition, and for plinking, the list goes on and on. The pistol is gaining traction as a home defense weapon due to it’s ease of use, and how compact the weapon is. In my opinion, the best handgun for home defense  should be a full sized model, chambered in a capable cartridge so I’ve compiled a list of top 3 picks.

The next 3 are my favorite models for home defense.

Glock Full Sized models

Glock 17

Glock assigns a model number for every different caliber of weapon, and this list could be all Glocks, but that wouldn’t be very fun for the rest of us. The Full-sizelightoutUSA Glock models have a lot to offer, high magazine capacity, dependability, accuracy, and a plethora of available accessories. These weapons come equipped with a
rail for the addition of a weapon light, which is very handy for a home defense handgun. Full sized Glocks are available in the following calibers 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, 10mm, 45 GAP, and 357 SIG.

CZ P09

This severely underrated weapon is an excellent home defense piece. The classic CZ 75 has been adopted into a polymer frame and outfitted with all the modern features. Available with a decocker, or a safety this Da/Sa wonder nine is ready to roll with 19 rounds of 9mm. The P09’s low bore axis makes the weapon more controllable and is equipped with a nice long rail for an accessory. The P09 comes in different varieties with the standard model going for around 450, and the model with night sights for 500.

Smith and Wesson 686+

– I had to have one big revolver in here for multiple reasons. The 686 + was chosen for it’s 7 round cylinder and the reputation of being one of Smith’s best guns. The 357 magnum is a very potent round, more than capable of dealing with two-legged vermins. The 686 + though is also suited for dealing with potential violent animals. Those in rural areas may have to deal with mountain lions, bears, wild hogs, all dangerous animals to go toe to with. So if you do, bring enough gun to do so.
